Vitamin C is probably the answer in most cases, and explains why in autmun (fall) I've been suffering allergies etc.

Today more than ever we are being encouraged to insulate our homes, wall cabity and loft insulation and so on.
But are you aware that in doing so, making a home tight air wise, double glazing and cutting down on all kinds of draughts can be a health hazard.
It was during my two week break off of work that I realized during a rather unusual early cold snap in October 2008 that something was not right indoors.
It was like I had a darn cold all the time, sneeze and runny nose and so it went on.

A weather station like thingy from maplins soon revealed the extent of the problem, humidity often in excess of 70%, wow, not good.

I have since spend last couple of weeks researching and buying a dehumidifer and loft insulation and you name it.

The key it seems is to keep the darn humidity below 50%, ideally they say around 40 per cent in winter in the house, especially the bedroom, where the so called house dust mites live, mainly in the maitress of your lovely cosy warm bed, yuck.

Anyway, with much research, as I said above, as ever I do the work, so you don't have to and I hope this comes up high enough on search engines like google and yahoo so that you find this first and I'll provide some of the best links for you, some in PDF format and some just ordinary html.

Seriously, it is worth the money buying a dehumidifer, doing your loft, cheap eco insulation from B&Q and maybe ever taking out the gas fire, using a radiator and using where the gas fire was to put in an exhaust fan. Careful taking the gas fire out, turning the thing off and so on, have to know roughly what you are doing.
So never mind a fan for ventilation taking air out of the kitchen and bathroom, I feel it is worth putting something like that in the bedroom too.

First before the many links, trying to keep the dust mite population down, among obvious vacuming and so on, you need that humidity down.
Problem, winter, thing is if you open a window, apparently the 80% plus humid weather comes in and if you have a heater on, say at around 21.0c 70 plus F, then that means it will reduce the humidity drastically.
However, hang on, it's cold, opening the window, your kidding, wasting money, right, now you get the picture.

Also add a small fan in the top corner of the room, blowing across the room, high up and over to where you have the dehumidifer.
As I type this, with window open I admit, it finally has gotten to 45%, amen, phew, about the best I've seen so far, hopefully will drop a bit more.
(LOL) laughs. It was during the start of my break, shaving my hair really short, that will teach me, that I felt I had a humidity gauge always with me. One could feel the moisture attacking my head as I moved out of my room and into other areas with higher humidity.

So what are the dangers, just as low humidity, below 30 per cent can cause problem, dry throat, so on, wood cracking, what about that higher humidity, over 60% say, what are the symptoms.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the growth of mold (
mould) and fungus, so on, releasing it's spores or whatever, just as bad as the dust-mites.

First, what also caused all this was condensation on the windows, driving me mad.
So that is the first port of call, if you have condensation on the inside of your windows and water as well, especially on old aluminum windows then there is your proof you have high humidity and something needs to be done about it, and turning up the heat often does not make much odds, though can help some, along with, if not too cold, opening the window slightly.

1. Is it a cold or is it allergy? Sometimes it's difficult to tell. Allergy symptoms typically include sneezing, runny nose, nasal and sinus congestion, sinus headache, fatigue and itching of the eyes. Cold symptoms are due to virus infections. Cold viruses produce symptoms of runny nose, sinus congestion and headache and may also be associated with occasional fever, chills and muscle aches. However, viruses do not produce itching symptoms at all. In short, allergy does not produce fever and colds do not produce itching.  Click here for full article.

So it is important to stress that it probably is not just a common cold, when it comes and goes and lasts for 2 or three weeks and you only seem to have it on the house and in certaint rooms as well. What was staggering as you see from the above list, is what else happens, we might know, those of us suffering about say house dust mites causing us to sneeze, but mention of headaches, which I've had, woken up with, in trying to control this humidity thing and being tired and runny nose and itching and so on.
Another thing, having these bugs can also lead to is Dermatitis etc.

Finally to business, what I know you really came here for, the many links below that you want to, like me, read, I found it fascinating, been boarding on obsessive, lol, this is because I think that anything that affects our health, soon mobilizes us into taking action.

First Relative Humidity then Dust mites and then Asthma and so on, see below and God bless you in your quest to win back your health. And, WHY on earth isn't the truth being told about houses now that are having insulation done, in walls and lofts and windows, so on, about the risks in it now needing better ventilation. By the way I just got reading of 44 per cent now, phew, lol. Bye Bye dust mites, trouble is, keeping it at that level, easier said than done.

Oh and by the way, from fleas to booklice and silverfish, you name it, many bugs seem to rely on over 50% per cent humidity to survive and thrive.
So get that humidity down, buy a dehumidifier, vent using fans, air in and out of rooms and so many other measures you can take and act upon and like me now, watch your health begin to improve, sneeze, what sneezing, amen.
Be careful not to lower the humidity too much, producing ozone and causing eye and throat problems etc.
I was fine until couple weeks or so back and believed I caught a cold, but 12 days on (5th dec 08) I'm suffering badly, blocked nose, cough, so on. I realize I don't have enough vitamin intake, like vitamin C for example for a start and a need to really control my humidity, meaning often I was going to the low 40 per-cents when I think the ideal is around 45 min to 49 max.
There may yet be other factors, in my research I'm continuing to uncover and address them and hopefully over time, coming weeks I'll be able to update and report below the improvements.
Remember during the last many days in the UK we have had exceptionally continually cold weather. I say this because, though I have a bad memory these days, I recall in the past a cold spell, but usually broken up after say a few days.
But this year, it seems, we saw the first snow in October, first in decades apparently in some parts of the UK, etc. And continous cold weather, meaning hardly a break, maybe a day or few hours when a system goes through making it slightly warmer, before we go back to temperatures close to freezing again, mainly at nights.
This is causing trouble with humidity controls in the home, hence the condensation and water you have on the inside of your windows etc.
It is about balance it seems. The Bible tells us Honey is good for us, but also over dosing on it can be bad. Same with vitamin C, same with humidity, tests seem to show that keeping it around the 50% mark is about the best if you suffer allergies like me, because of the excessive blowing of the nose in previous years growing up. I can feel the itch when I've sniffed something up and sneeze, sneeze, sometimes maybe 4 to 7 times in a row.
I become weak then and get sweat some and require food, normally and funnily enough cerials, don't ask, why I have often thought it is not normal hayfever, as I've never read that being the case with others suffering from hayfever.
Update: (15 Dec 2008)
Finally after 3 weeks of the coughing leading to being sick, that's vomitting and blocked nose, has all but gone, well sinus still an issue come bed time. Hard to say, but likely a cold that then lead to either one of many things, sinus infection or something.
Needless to say, I shall strive to keep the humidity around the 45% mark in future, little above or below is not to bad, though not always easy, should be better on long term health, and of course taking more vitamin C and so on also.
It seems if you go too much below 50% I am open to bacteria and viruses and respiratory infections and if you let the humidity go much above 50% or to low as well I am open the dust mites and sneezing and runny nose. I almost can't win, but hopefully taking more vitamin C and eating better and keeping the humidity close to 50% all year round should improve my health, Amen.
